After we checked in to our hotel room, Tasha noticed that there were earplugs on the nightstand. It was about then that we noticed the freeway right outside our window! After looking at two more rooms, we finally found one we liked!
We spent the rest of the day at the boat museum, touring several boats and a submarine.
Saturday we were excited to go whale watching on a sailboat.
Still no sign of any whales....
I love to see dolphins in the ocean. They're so beautiful and graceful!
Finally, when all hope was lost, we saw some Minki whales. There were about fifteen of them. Not the huge whales we were hoping for, but apparently it's pretty rare to see these. They're usually very shy and don't let people get too close. The first mate said he had only seen these once before. At first we wondered if we had been conned - these look nothing like the pictures in the books. But some utube videos convinced me that these actually are Minkis.
Sunday we went to the Point Loma lighthouse, built in 1855. "What seemed to be a good location 422 feet above sea level, however, had a serious flaw. Fog and low clouds often obscured the light. After 30 shipwrecks, the light was extinguished and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse location closer to the water at the tip of the Point."
This picture is hard to see, but the grey blob at the end of the stick is called a "Sea Hare." It's basically a rabbit sized snail that lives in the water!
This is a Chiton. It's a green clam-like thing with a big pink tongue.
I scaled my way through a small, narrow rock canyon, and these crabs were in every crack! I could hear them all around me blowing bubbles with their tiny mouths - it was the neatest thing ever!
It was a great trip - and we came home relaxed and ready to jump back into real life. Corbin had so much fun with his dad while I was gone, he told me I should go back! Thanks for making sacrifices so I could go, Scott. You're a great dad, and your kids and wife adore you!
